Yale School of Drama Presents

ALICE

Concept by Robert Wilson, Music and Lyrics by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, Libretto by Paul Schmidt, Directed by Logan Ellis

ALICE was my thesis production at the Yale School of Drama, my largest work yet in terms of budget, personnel, and institutional support, and an experience filled with joy and learning for me. I discovered this work through the Tom Waits album of the same name, which my dad played for me growing up. Though the story in the album is left mysterious, in combination with the libretto from Paul Schmidt it shares Alice Liddell’s life-long voyage of healing from childhood trauma. Working from a spare script, suggestive score, and the imaginations of my collaborators at Yale, we created the first English-language performance of ALICE.
